South Jersey gay rights activists were gearing up for a last-minute victory rally Wednesday afternoon after the Supreme Court released its decision on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
The ruling struck down DOMA, granting married same-sex couples the same benefits as heterosexual couples at the federal level.
“I’m thrilled,” said Janice Rael of Clayton, vice president of the Delaware Valley chapter of Americans United For Separation of Church and State, an organization that includes marriage equality as one of its main causes. “We were nervous about how the court was going to rule. So many people’s rights were at stake.”
