New daytime discussion group in South Jersey, led by longtime DVAU member Marion Steininger. To be held on the third Tuesday of each month at 12:00pm at Sakura Spring on Route 70. Heading east from 295, it’s just past the old Syms store in the very next little shopping area- the very next entry. http://www.sakuraspring.com/
Marion will lead the group in a chat about issues mentioned in Americans United’s Church & State Magazine, as well as the local media. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to be put in touch with Marion for more details and to RSVP.
Note: Emailed RSVPs and contact with Marion is required! She is leading the way to organize DVAU members in South Jersey. If you show up without having RSVPd, there may not be a seat for you.
Our September lunch speaker will be DVAU member and Speaker-at-Large, Gloria Andersen. She is a plaintiff in the Americans United/ACLU lawsuit against state funding of religious seminaries.
During the 1980’s Gloria Andersen’s family moved to a school district that did not know they had members of minority religions and atheists among them. The teachers handed out calendars leading to Santa’s coming, and most of the curriculum for the month of December was focused on Christmas. Thus began Gloria’s involvement with the ADL, ACLU and AU. She was trained to rely on education, communication, and organization to maintain the separation of church and state. Please join us for our September 17th meeting at Sakura Springs Restaurant as we hear a brief humorous presentation on the History of Christmas in America, and then discuss relevant court rulings on the issue. Strategies for calmly discussing issues with educators will also be discussed. It is too late to talk about Christmas in December. Please also feel free to bring articles and issues that you believe we should be aware of to the meeting as there will be time set aside for updates as well.
