Join DVAU for a major debate on school vouchers, in particular, Pennsylvania’s bill SB-1, which would divert taxpayer dollars from public education in order to finance religious and private schools. The Delaware Valley Americans United chapter opposes school vouchers in every form, and fully supports public education for all. SB-1 did not pass during the most recent legislative session, but could be back on the table in one way or another when the new session begins in the fall.
PA State Senator Anthony H Williams, a co-sponsor of SB-1, will attempt to defend his legislation with the help of Leslie Davis Hiner, Esq., VP at The Foundation for Educational Choice, who has been called “the nation’s leading voucher advocates” by the Wall Street Journal.
Debating the voucher proponents and giving arguments against voucher programs are Burton Caine, Professor at Temple Law School, representing the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania (ACLU-PA) and Americans for Religious Liberty, which advocates for the separation of church and state; and Marc Stier, Executive Director, Penn Action, who works with individuals and coalitions on statewide campaigns to strengthen social, economic, and health security for all Pennsylvanians.
The debate is free and open to the public, but seating is limited to 75 people, so please RSVP.
The event takes place from 3pm to 5pm in the Parish Room at the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia, 2125 Chestnut St Philadelphia, PA, 19103.
