Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Sims (D-Philadelphia) Will Serve As Keynote Speaker At May Gathering
The Delaware Valley Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State (DVAU) will host a conference in Pennsylvania this spring on the state of religious liberty in America.
“Reclaiming Religious Freedom From the Radical Right” will be held at the Downtown Philadelphia Marriott on May 2 from noon to 6pm. DVAU will present five speakers including Pennsylvania State Representative Brian Sims (D-Philadelphia), an outspoken advocate for church-state separation.
“The Radical Right is trying to take true religious freedom away from us,” said Janice Rael, acting DVAU chapter president. “They’re twisting the meaning of the words “religious freedom” to suit their own theocratic purposes.”
Rael added that she hopes the public will come out to learn more about the Radical Right’s plot to pass so-called “religious freedom” bills that are nothing more than a license to discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, or to deny women insurance coverage for birth control. The lineup of speakers will be ready to inform on what can be done about this new threat to true freedom of religion.
In addition to Sims, the conference will feature presentations from Sarah Jones, communications associate at Americans United’s national office; Brian Silva, executive director of Marriage Equality USA; Jason Stewart, an Americans United board member; and the Rev. Cynthia Cain of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Jersey Shore.
The DVAU 2015 “Reclaiming Religious Freedom From the Radical Right Conference” is free and open to the public. For more information, please email firstname.lastname@example.org, call Janice Rael at 856-881-1816, or visit http://dvau.org.
