The Delaware Valley Americans United Chapter, DVAU, will meet on Thursday May 5, 2016, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at the Free Library of Philadelphia, 19th & Vine Sts, in Room 405. Free and open to the public.
Enter the library, pass the info desk to the alcove on the right. Take the elevator to the 4th floor, follow the hallway around the corner, following the “Kitchen” signs. Room 405 is the first door on the right.
Our speaker will be the Bill Mefford, the new Faith Outreach Director at the home office of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. His topic is “Keeping Sacred Spaces Sacred: A Discussion on Pulpit Politicking.”
“Keeping Sacred Spaces Sacred: A Discussion on Pulpit Politicking will lead to a deeper understanding of the role faith communities can take in public engagement for those who participate. We will define “politicking from the pulpit” and ensure that there is understanding of what constitutes violations of the Internal Revenue Service tax code. Even more, we want to take this brief time to begin to image and envision what a faithful and constructive public engagement looks like and how faith communities can engage in advocacy and organizing without causing others harm. I hope the faith leaders present will be more equipped to lead discussions with their congregations and with their ministerial colleagues. We will create a space so that deeper understanding and deeper connections can be made and can lead to a more coordinated and stronger connection of faith partners in their local communities.”
Invite your favorite members of the clergy to come and hear how they can discuss political issues without running afoul of the IRS.
