The Delaware Valley Americans United Chapter, DVAU, will meet on Thursday November 5, 2015, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at the Free Library of Philadelphia, 19th & Vine Sts, in Room 405. Free and open to the public.
Our speaker on November 5 is Jonathan Engel, son of Steven Engel, presenting his talk, “Engel v. Vitale and the Separation of Church and State.” Jonathan’s late father, Steven Engel, was one of the plaintiffs in the landmark Supreme Court case (“Engel v. Vitale“, 1962) where the Court held that organized prayers in public schools were an impermissible violation of the Constitution’s Establishment Clause.
Jonathan Engel’s talk covers the general history of the separation of church and state in this country, then goes more specifically into the issue of school prayer in American history, and then discusses the specifics of the Engel case, looked at from historical, legal and personal vantage points.
Enter the library, pass the info desk to the alcove on the right. Take the elevator to the 4th floor, follow the hallway around the corner, following the “Kitchen” signs. Room 405 is the first door on the right.
This will be DVAU’s final regular chapter meeting in Room 405 of the Free Library until March 3, 2016, when we will meet again.
