“Is Your Religion Really My Religion?: The Battle for Genuine Religious Freedom in America.” The culture wars in America are seeing another battle being waged by leaders of the political and religious right: “What is real religious freedom in this country.” Their bogus claims that their religious freedom is being attacked by left-wing, “god-less” activists are everywhere, from the media to state legislatures to the halls of Congress, and yes, right up to the steps of the White House. Rev. Steven Baines, Director of Religious Outreach for Americans United for Separation of Church and State, will address the key question, “Is the fundamental principle of the religious liberty guaranteed in the US Constitution really being attacked or is this the latest political tactic being used by the far right in America? Baines will examine how this argument is being used to undermine the Affordable Care Act, specifically the contraception mandate; attack current state LGBT non-discrimination laws; devalue the growing religious pluralism in America; and polarize the upcoming 2014 mid-term elections. Rev. Baines is a long-term supporter of religious liberty and church-state separation having been raised, ordained and served pulpits in the Southern Baptist church.
